Abstract

This study seeks to explain LGBT behaviour in relation to heterosexuality in the city of Sorong, based on the assumption that in Indonesia, LGBT behaviour conflicts with the prevailing culture, traditions and religious values, making it difficult to sustain or practise openly. This study was conducted to investigate the presence of LGBT individuals in relation to heterosexual behaviour, where there is a desire to return to ‘normal’ behaviour. This study employs a qualitative approach using a phenomenological design based on the experiences of LGBT individuals in Sorong City. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and subsequently analysed and organised according to established criteria. The results of the study indicate that the majority of LGBT individuals interviewed (lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals) in Sorong City tend to live their lives in secrecy, yet do not completely shut themselves off from the world. On the other hand, their heterosexual nature desires normal behaviour, though some also experience trauma stemming from past circumstances. Therefore, it is necessary for each individual (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) to be aware of the need to live their lives as human beings in their interactions and to recognise the norms, ethics, culture and religion that govern our lives in society.
