Relasi Kekuasaan Keluarga dan Dinamika Politik Lokal di Kota Sorong
Abstract
The phenomenon of dynastic politics or kinship-based power relations remains a salient feature of local political dynamics in various regions of Indonesia, including the City of Sorong. Family-based power relations not only influence political recruitment and electoral contestation but also shape decision-making processes, resource distribution, and the overall quality of local governance. This study aims to analyze the forms, mechanisms, and impacts of family power relations on local political dynamics in the City of Sorong. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with local political actors, community leaders, and government officials, as well as document analysis of election results, local regulations, and local media reports. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The findings indicate that family power relations in the City of Sorong operate through kinship networks, political patronage, and control over political and economic resources. These patterns contribute to the reproduction of power within specific family circles, which potentially limits fair political competition and narrows opportunities for political participation by non-family actors. On the other hand, in certain social contexts, family-based power relations are perceived by some segments of society as a source of political stability and leadership continuity. Nevertheless, the dominance of kinship networks tends to weaken the principles of accountability, transparency, and meritocracy in local governance.
This study concludes that family power relations constitute a significant factor shaping local political dynamics in the City of Sorong and have substantial implications for the quality of local democracy and governance. Therefore, strengthening regulatory frameworks, enhancing transparency in political processes, and improving public political literacy are necessary to promote more inclusive and capacity-based political competition.
