Abstract

Ricardo F. Tapilatu, Pusat Peneitian Sumberdaya Perairan Pasifik (P2SP2) - Universitas Papua

I am the head of the Research Center for Pacific Marine Resources at the University of Papua (UNIPA), Manokwari – Papua Barat Indonesia. The research center is a state education and research institution that helps to understand and conserve the pristine ocean life throughout the Bird’s Head Seascape, an epicenter of marine biodiversity and marine megafauna in the Western Pacific. In addition, I am a faculty member in the Fisheries and Marine Science departments. I teach Marine Biology, Ecology and Conservation, and Natural and Environmental Resources Management for the University of Papua post-graduate Program. I am also a co-Regional Vice Chair for the Australasian IUCN Marine Turtle Specialist Group. Partnering with multiple research institutions, I have been studying the ecology and conservation of marine megafauna in relation to both local and global dynamic processes. Most of my research has been on the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) in the Bird's Head Seascape. This area is one of the last remaining strongholds for leatherback nesting in the entire Pacific Ocean. His research on leatherback turtles has focused on migration, population dynamics and conservation. These studies have led to the development of a science-based beach management plan that integrates natural, and also economic and social aspects of leatherback conservation with local communities. Recently, I have been been focused on the development of a marine biodiversity and habitat components to help index the health status of the ocean in Indonesia. This index will be essential to guide decision makers toward the sustainable use of the ocean and its resources in Indonesia. My present research projects are focused on developing conservation strategies for optimizing hatchling production from nesting beaches of the Bird’s Head Seascape in Indonesia and beyond, while mitigating the effects of global climate change.
